Arner JW(1), Ruzbarsky JJ, Vidal AF, Frank RM. Author information: (1)From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA (Arner), the The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute, Aspen, CO (Ruzbarsky), the The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute, Vail, CO (Vidal), and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Colorado, Denver, CO (Frank). Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the meniscus is essential for appropriate treatment. The unique anatomy of the medial and lateral meniscus and blood supply play an important role in decision making. Controversy exists regarding the optimal treatment of meniscal tears including débridement, repair, root repair, and transplantation. The unique tear location and morphology thus plays an essential role in determination of appropriate treatment. Repair is generally advised in tear types with healing potential to preserve meniscal function and joint health. Copyright © 2022 by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
