Abstract

[Indexed for MEDLINE] 16. Vet Clin North Am Small Anim Pract. 2020 Jan;50(1):1-15. doi: 10.1016/j.cvsm.2019.08.009. Epub 2019 Oct 18. Biomechanics of Fracture Fixation. Roe S(1). Author information: (1)Small Animal Orthopaedics, Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, 1052 William Moore Drive, Raleigh, NC 27607, USA. Electronic address: sroe@ncsu.edu. This article reviews the biomechanical parameters of fracture repair that influence construct stiffness and strength. The stiffness influences the relative motion between fracture fragments, known as gap strain, and, thus, callus development. Construct strength determines the magnitude and number of load events that the repair can resist before failure. Surgeons must optimize these parameters in order to achieve satisfactory outcomes for the patients. Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. DOI: 10.1016/j.cvsm.2019.08.009
